Having a good morning routine is not just about waking up early,  it’s about creating a personalized ritual that caters to your goals, well-being, and aspirations. Don’t be scared, I’m not going to suggest waking up at 4am – unless this works for your schedule. I actually shared my 7am morning routine a few months ago and I am now working on my new 6am morning routine.

In this guide, we’ll dive into the process of building a morning routine that’s not only motivating but uniquely yours. We will go through the process of how to create a morning routine, we will have a list of ideas of rituals to include as part of your routine and finally, you will find a checklist template that you can use to track your new morning routine. Let’s embark on this journey together!

How To Create a Morning Routine

Embarking on the journey of creating a morning routine is more than just setting an early alarm. It’s a transformative process that requires self-reflection, time management, habit building ,and commitment. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you craft a morning routine that aligns with your goals.

1. Self-reflection

Take a moment to reflect on your short-term and long-term goals. What aspects of your life do you want to prioritize in the morning? Do you want to focus on your health? or maybe mindfulness? Then, evaluate your current morning habits and identify areas for improvement.

2. Write down a list of what you want (or don’t want) to do

Now that you have a better idea of what to focus on, make a list of habits or rituals that you would want to add to your morning routine. List as many items as you want, we will prioritize and create and schedule later. Some examples can be: exercise, go for a walk, hydrate, have a healthy breakfast, journal, walk the dog.

Then, also make a list of habits that you want to eliminate from your routine, for example scrolling through TikTok or checking your email

3. How long can your morning routine be?

Ask yourself how much time you realistically have in the mornings to dedicate to your routine? For example, if you need to be at work at 9am and it takes you 30 minutes to commute and you want to wake up at 6am, then you have 2.5 hours to dedicate to your routine. Can you just wake up earlier to have more time in the morning? Absolutely, but keep in mind that if you don’t want to sacrifice your sleep that will mean going to bed earlier and having less time for your evening routine, so it’s a trade off.

4. Design a Schedule

Now, it’s time to create your morning routine! Start adding the most important activities to your morning routine schedule and allocate specific time blocks for each activity. It doesn’t have to be exact, you can always adjust your schedule later. Incorporate a mix of activities that address different aspects of your life, such as physical health, mental well-being, and personal development. Here is an example for a 2.5 hours morning routine:

  • Make your bed and wash your face (5 minutes)
  • Hydrate (5 minutes)
  • Walk the dog (10 minutes)
  • Exercise (50 minutes)
  • Stretch (5 minutes)
  • Shower (15 minutes)
  • Skincare and makeup and listen to a podcast (15 minutes)
  • Style hair (15 minutes)
  • Get dressed (5 minutes)
  • Make and eat breakfast (15 minutes)
  • Journaling (10 minutes)

5. Build one habit at a time

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a perfect morning routine. Introduce changes gradually to ensure lasting habits. Remember that it takes a minimum of 21 days and on average 66 days to form a new habit. If you are trying to add too many new habits at the same time to your morning routine, you may just end up failing at all of them.

6. Adapt and Track

Life is unpredictable, and mornings are no exception. Acknowledge that your routine may need adjustments and build in flexibility. If needed, allow for a buffer in your schedule to handle unexpected situations without derailing your entire morning.

It is also important to have a good tracking mechanism, at least in the beginning. This can be a simple checklist, a spreadsheet or even an app. Keep scrolling for a free morning routine checklist template.
